Students at manchester university have defaced a mural of Rudyard Kipling's poem if, it hung on the wall of the student union. Student union leader fatima abid and her friends decided that his poem,( a white mans burden ) had racist overtones, so therefore all of Rudyards work should not be tolerated, they have painted over it and replaced it with a poem by black activist Maya Angelou. Nazis burning books, christian missionaries destroying mayan books, Isis defacing ancient statues and art. We cannot judge people of the past by the social standards of today. Who knows in a 100 years time gay rights racial and sexual equality, civil rights and our liberal morals will be judged by a people who think of us as disgusting backward decadent savages. What are we to do, destroy the art and writings of ancient rome and greece? Their society depended on slavery, and the greeks positively encouraged homosexuality between older men and young boys as a way of life. Cliff richard would have been in his element then.
